Can I safely take DCI in combination with other supplements?
Yes D-Chirol-Inositol can safely be taken together with other supplements. It’s not known to interact with any other supplements. DCI is a substance which occurs naturally in your body, and is also produced by your body. It is a so called secondary messenger that ensures that insuline is properly recognized by the body. DCI is soluble in water, therefore any access DCI will be excremented through urine.
Does DCI influence the reliability of a birth control pill?
No, DCI does not influence the workings and effectiveness of birth control pills. It’s save to take DCI and birth control at the same time. Birth control pills do conceal PCOS related complaints, so it might be harder to rightfully asses what the effects of DCI are.
What is the correct dosage for DCI?
Current scientific research has established the effectiveness of DCI with a dose of 1200 mg per day. When taking the weight of the test subjects in consideration, a dose of 600 mg (one capsule) should be sufficient for body weights up to 60 kg. In practice this means that if you weigh 60 kg or less, you take 1 capsule per day. If you weigh between 60 and 120 kg, you take 2 capsules per day. If you weigh more than 120 kg, 3 capsules is the correct dosage.
When in doubt (so for instance when you weigh right around the 60 kg mark) it is advised to start with the higher dose (so 2 capsules per day). In this way you can best assess how DCI works for you, and you are sure you are not under dosing (which would be a reason for it not to work). It takes 8 weeks for the supplement to take full effect, after this period, you could lower the dose to see if the effects remain.
It is best to take DCI directly after waking up, before breakfast. In this way, you ensure that the substance has time to enter the bloodstream and do it’s work, before the first ‘sugar’ enters the body.
When taking several capsules, it’s best to spread those over the day. When taking 2 capsules: 1 before breakfast and 1 before dinner. When taking 3 capsules: 1 before breakfast, 1 before lunch and 1 before dinner.
Do not exceed the recommended dose. Have you forgotten to take a dose, just continue taking DCI at the regular next moment (so effectively you’re skipping a dose).
Can I take too much DCI?
DCI is soluble in water and any surplus is excreted through urine. Do stick to the suggested dose.
Can I safely use DCI when I’m trying to get pregnant while receiving medical fertility treatment?
DCI is a substance which occurs naturally in your body, and is also produced by your body. It is a so called secondary messenger that ensures that insuline is properly recognized by the body. DCI is soluble in water, therefore any access DCI will be excremented through urine.
Do consult with your doctor before taking DCI.
What is the difference between D-Chiro-Inositol (DCI) and Inositol?
Both Myo-Inositol (which is usually called just Inositol) as D-Chiro-Inositol (DCI) belong to the vitamine B family. DCI is a secondary messenger that helps the body to react to insuline normally.
Myo-Inositol is abundantly present in and very easily absorbed from several foods. DCI only naturally occurs in very small quantities in food, and the required quantities for women suffering from PCOS can not be obtained in this way. The body can make D-Chiro-Inositol from Myo-Inositol, but the process is long, contains several steps and is difficult, and not working effectively in women with PCOS.
In practice, it’s the above process that forms the problem for women suffering from PCOS.
What is the difference between D-Chiro-Inositol (DCI) and Metformin?
Metformin lowers blood glucose levels by means of foreign substances. These substances form a challenge when processed by the liver. As this organ plays a crucial role in maintaining normal hormonal levels, this obviously forms a problem.
DCI is a natural substance known to the body that supports insuline sensitivity. As DCI always normally occurs in the body, it has no side effects, which unfortunately is definitely not the case with Metformin.
Does taking DCI or any of the other supplements make sense when I do not have a healthy general lifestyle?
To support and accelerate the effect of the different supplements, DCI included, it is advised to also make some more health conscious decisions.
If you take these supplements and you stick to a unhealthy way of living (unhealthy eating, smoking, consuming large amounts of alcohol, insufficient sleeping) the (noticeable) effect of the supplements will be less.
Can’t I just get DCI from the food I eat?
DCI is present in small amounts in some foods like buckwheat, chickpeas, soy lecithine, pumpkin and pumpkin seeds. The amount of DCI present in the supplement and that which is needed for DCI to be effective, is much larger than the amounts present in foods. Practically speaking it’s impossible to get the needed amounts of DCI through food and eating.
Why doesn’t my General Practioner or doctor know about DCI?
It is very well possible that your GP or doctor is not familiar with a natural supplement like D-Chirol-Inositol. Generally, doctors are very well trained in and knowledgable about all kinds of pharmaceuticals. How unlikely it may seem, in all the years of studying to become a doctor, they received extreme little training on natural health, the healing qualities of some foods and nutrition in general.
Because DCI is a natural occurring substance, it can’t be patented. Therefore, the pharmaceutical industry is not interested in researching, marketing and promoting D-Chiro-Inositol, as it won’t bring in enough money to recoup their investment.
That’s why pharmaceuticals do not promote natural products like DCI to General Practitioners and other doctors, something that definitely does happen with ‘regular’ medicine. And therefore, very often doctors do not know of the existence and advantages of a supplement like DCI.
