Which food contains Omega 3?
There are 3 different types of Omega 3 fatty acids and they are found in different dietary sources, namely:
ALA : an unsaturated fatty acid that you mainly get from plant sources such as walnuts and avocados.
DHA : an unsaturated Omega 3 fatty acid that mainly occurs in fish and shellfish. But also in algae.
EPA : this unsaturated Omega 3 fatty acid is also mainly found in fish and shellfish.
ALA can be converted into EPA and DHA in the body, but this only produces a small amount of these fatty acids.
When to use an Omega 3 supplement?
Omega 3 is healthy and important for everyone. The Health Council advises adults to get 200 milligrams of Omega 3 per day with the diet. You could get this amount by eating enough oily fish. A portion of oily fish (herring, mackerel, anchovies, salmon) once or twice a week should be sufficient. If you don't eat enough fish or if you eat vegetarian or vegan, our Omega 3 vegan algae oil supplement is a good addition.
