Except for the moments when you have to urinate, you are not aware of your bladder in a healthy situation. The organ collects your urine until it is sufficiently full and you have to urinate. Only then do you feel the presence of your bladder, because you feel the urge. How do you ensure that your bladder remains in the healthiest possible condition? What is the bladder and what does this organ do?

The bladder is the storage space for your urine. The urine is made in the kidneys and flows through the ureters to the bladder. The bladder is located at the bottom of your abdomen: behind your pubic bone and in front of/under the uterus (in women).
The bladder can hold more than half a liter of urine in its most stretched state, but you usually feel the urge to urinate before that. When your bladder is healthy, urine only flows out when you want it to: when you go to the toilet and urinate consciously. Urinating should be painless and we do it about six to seven times a day. The bladder muscles contract and in this way the bladder pushes the urine out through the urethra.

How do I keep my bladder healthy?

The health of your bladder is important. There are several things you can do to keep your bladder as healthy as possible. Below are our tips:

Number 1 by far: drink enough . For bladder health, but also for the health of your body in general, you need to drink about one and a half to two liters of fluid every day. Do you find it difficult to drink enough? Keep a list that you cross off to see how much you have drunk. Nowadays, there are also fun apps for this (for example Water Tracker ). Or put a large jug of water at your workplace, which reminds you of your water consumption during the day.

Pee when you feel the urge . You don't have to pee all day long 'just to be sure', but go when you feel the urge. Don't hold it in any longer, that's not healthy for the bladder.

Make sure you have a good urinating posture : Relax, put your feet on the floor and make sure you sit upright on the toilet. Keep your knees slightly apart. Take your time to urinate calmly and then empty your bladder completely, so that there is no small layer of urine left in the bladder.

Pushing? Better not! It is better not to push. It is better to just let the urine flow calmly at the pace at which it does so naturally. Push in one go, because holding back in between is not wise.

Practice good toilet hygiene: Always wipe from front to back. You want to avoid rubbing bacteria from the bowel up the urethra at all costs.

Urinate after sex: During sex, bacteria that don't belong there can more easily end up around the urethra. That's why urinating after intercourse is always very important for a woman.

Take care of your bladder with healthy foods (and drinks) : There are a number of foods and drinks that are known to irritate or disrupt the bladder. These include alcohol, acidic drinks such as orange juice, spicy foods, carbonated drinks and caffeine (in coffee, cola and energy drinks).
